Artist StatementI knew this would pose a challenge to me, so I decided to go with a theme. I knew that if I went wild with the item selection, I'd have nothing to write other than "these items look nice to me, and therefore, they are art." While a fun argument to make, it doesn't exactly make a few paragraphs. The theme I chose was "things that can break," and I limited that further to "things that can break, and mean something." You can break almost anything, but what breakable things have common phrases?
Some of these items have significance to my family. The necklace and piggy bank belong to my father, and the brace, skeleton hand, and trophy all belong to my sister. Some items are all me, like the eggshell and ping pong balls. Some I got with help from friends, like the exit sign and giant metal sheet. It was a lot of fun finding and using these items. There are 14 items that can break on this piece. Can you find the phrase for each of them? |
