Artist Statement
With this work, I wanted to re-purpose an old idea I had as a child. I used to believe that mirrors were literal windows into other worlds, and the only thing keeping me from entering was my reflection. I was afraid of mirrors in the dark, because if I couldn't see my reflection, I could go in, and if someone turned the lights on, I would be stuck there forever. I'm older now, and I wanted to take a spin on that old fear. I wanted to say something that my reflection would say from that mirror world - HELLO OUT THERE. I used gouache for the letters and left "Hello" blank, to bring attention to the fact that we're "out there."
